Spark plug manufacturers should have an applications chart. See if Champion QL78YC is right plug.

Thank you!

It had a QL82YC in it. What would be the difference or possible reason for someone to do that? Heat range? Or just availability? Regardless, i want to put a proper plug in it. However, I see the QL78YC is very expensive as opposed to the L77JC4 I run in my J70...

Could I run the l77c4 in the 175? Not trying to cheap out just trying to learn and if one is as good as the other why pay 3 times the price. I just aquired the 175 fast strike and am just learning the motor. My service manual is 10 days out.

Why are the 2 different plugs so far apart in price?

Autozone in Tenn does not carry these only the NGK crossover at $7 each. Advance and Carquest are special order and my cost thru my distributor is $2.56 a plug as I buy shop packs of 24...

Autozone only had one in stock and it was $7.50. Nappa has 5 at a store 10 miles from me for 3.49 a plug... Arggg.

Without the Q plugs in that mtr you could screw up the ignition system with erratic firing.

Gee, A few years ago, I paid $1.99 a spark plug at some random Autozone in Pennsylvania. I also think I got some two years ago at the local Autozone....

Just received the owners manual for this motor and the factory recommended plug is a QL77JC4...! Basically the same one I run in my J70... I asked about that in my above post #4.

So, the above recommendations were erroneous...

So, $24 dollars worth of plugs go in the trash or for an emergency I guess... Geez...

Gee, Your owners manual was written when?
Go on the Champion Spark Plug web site and look up your motor. A lot of the spark plug recommendations changed. Check yours.

Your manual is correct at that time but due to flaws in ignition system and todays fuel they where revised to us the QL78YC plugs...
So, $24 dollars worth of plugs go in the trash or for an emergency I guess... Geez...
Put them in as they are correct..below is paste from revised OMC/BRP spark chart

150, 175 (60? V6) 1991 & newer QL78YC (see note 3) .030
150 Commercial (60? V6) 1993 - 2001 QL78YC (see note 3) .030

NOTES:
1. All spark plugs are Champion brand unless otherwise specified.
2. When more than one plug number appears, the first plug listed is the prefered spark plug.
* This chart was assembled with the latest available Parts Catalogs, Service Manuals and Service Bulletins as of the
revision date.
3. On ALL VRO/OMS equipped motors the "QL" supressor plug is recommended.

Re: OEM spec plugs for a 1995 Johnson 175 fast strike?

Ok, my bad, I kind of got panicky after I saw 1995 factory recommendation. I've started to realize a lot of parts for these motors have been updated since the original oem. Thanks for giving me the correct info. My apologies!

I took the boat out for the first time today and it ran GREAT!!! That motor rips! Shot out of the hole and up to top speed in seconds. I think I need a prop change however because it was easily turning 6500 rpm. It's a shooter SS 13 3/4 22* pitch.

I do need to drop the idle a bit as well so that will be my next post.
