I would like to add a tach onto my 72 johnson 50 hp electric start. It seems that there are a lot of tachs to choose from and they range in price. Can someone tell me if I need a certain type of tach for my engine?

You need a tach with a 6P setting. Three basic connections in the back; +12V (purple wire), Ground, and the grey signal wire that should be in the remote control (might be taped up if the engine has never had a tach). There may be an additional connection if the tach you purchase is illuminated.

That mtr would require 5 P position on the tach.

I do not see 5 p or 6 p called out in any description of tachometers that I have looked at. Does anyone know if part # 0177103 will work for a 1972 johnson 50 hp model 50esl72?

Are you looking at automotive tachs? There is a difference and like everything else "marine" ours are more expensive.
