1975 johnson 6hp water pump

I'm trying to get the lower unit back on and boy is this tricky. When I get the driveshaft up in the hole, i try to spin the prop to align the pin and the prop only spins half way. Should it be in reverse? Please anyone out there that an give me some pointers. Thanks

And when I get the pin lined up correctly do i have to spin the prop to lock it in?

Sometimes you fight the water pump impeller, try spinning the prop the other way. When you get every thing lined up it should slide right in and snug up to the exhaust housing, just put a bolt in it to keep the lower unit from slipping back out.
