How do I know if waterpump is working? Where does it return the water to? Out with the exhaust? There is a circle hole below hoood latch cover on back of motor is that where it comes out? Ran motor and seems like steam coming out of that? I am lost. Project pontoon I am working on? Thanks Andy

Yes, water should shoot out that circle hole with quite a force. Note that the water pump sits right on top of the lower unit mating surface (where it bolts up). The water must be a few inches above that for the pump to function.

I hooked up a hose to the inlet and ran the motor, all that comes out of the 1 inch hole is steam. Can I back flush water thru that hole?

Also read another thread that it doesnt have a pisser. but a hole halfway down backside of leg with a cover that it lets water out of that? Wish i had taken a picture. Going to work on it over lunch hour and will take a picture and post.
Glad I found this forum.

Thanks
Andy

DO NOT back flush... you'll be forcing water into the block via the exhaust ports!

The long portion between the powerhead and the lower unit is the exhaust housing. Approximately halfway down that exhaust housing is a fairly large hole... this is where the water telltale is on that model, and water (as mentioned above) should shoot out of that hole with a great force.

Water and exhaust also exit underwater via the opening just about the propeller.

Backside of "leg"? I've no idea what you're speaking of by "leg". The engine has a powerhead, a long exhaust housing, and a lower unit.

No, that engine does not have a water telltale outlet such as the newer engines have.

Here are some pictures. When I run the motor water and exhaust come out of 1 inch hole amount of water is light spray. Exhuast on bottom above prop good blast of exhuast and lots of water. Im assuming that means the water pump is working?
Thanks
Andy
