35hp Johnson; will not engage Forward gear; 1983 Long Shaft

Good day:

I would really appreciate some assistance with this.

I recently changed the water pump and prior to this never had a problem with the forward gear engaging; reverse works fine but neutral was at times also difficult to fully engage.

While changing the water pump I was very careful not to knock or pull on the drive shaft.

While having it in forward the engine revved fine but I could hear what sounded like a gear not meshing.

Again, this is a long shaft; the shift rod connects at the lower end where the water intakes are located.

What could I have done wrong?

take a look at your shift rod to make sure you assembled the same, sounds like it's not engaging all the way. hopefully you didn't make a metal slushy out of your lu with all that grinding, ooouch.

Did you put the little plastic keeper back in around the shift rod ??
