I have a 1972 glastron I recently bought as a project boat and I'm having troubles with the motor. The motor is a 1967 Johnson golden meteor 100 HP and I'm currently unable to remove the lower unit. I have taken off the 4 nuts that are exposed on the outside of the unit and removed the single bolt that is on the inside near the hose that goes into the impeller housing and I'm still unable to get the lower unit to move at all. The motor did not come with an owners manual or service manual so until I'm able to buy those things I'm at the mercy of everyone else's help. Thank you and any advice is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to iboats

According to my service manual there are 6 bolts and 2 cap screws(5 inches higher) that need to be removed
This is after you remove the lower motor cover and rear exhaust housing cover

any chance of you posting a picture?

Sorry, I meant 6 and typed 4 on accident. And I have also removed the small cover plate held on by 2 screws that is up about 5 inches from those 6 bolts and I couldn't see anything that would help me but I'm sure there is. I'm not sure what you mean by the lower motor cover or the rear exhaust housing cover but I will post pictures tonight and try to help you help me. Thanks!

STOP!! You must disconnect the electric shift cable or it will cost you $$$$ when you rip it in two. You do that by removing the lower covers as stated above.

Then there are 6 nuts and two bolts holding the gearcase on. The two bolts are 5" above the 6 nuts.

Very important what F_R said above about the electric shift cable. You could also have some drive shaft splines stuck in the crankshaft splines.

So once I remove the 6 nuts and the 2 bolts will the lower unit be able to drop out? Or do I still need to disconnect something else before trying to drop it?

Re: 1967 Golden Meteor 100 Hp lower unit

You have to, as F_R and boobie said disconnect the shift wires. the connectors are located up by the thermostat. Your pics show you have the rear exhaust cover off. In the first pic I can see the shift wires running down. On the port side of the exhaust housing these wires are going to enter into the exhaust housing. There should be a an access cover over this spot. you will need to take it off, The pass thru for the wires will also have 2 screws that need to be removed. You should be able to maneuver the wire along with the pass thru into the exhaust housing. Then you can undo the nuts and bolts to lower the case.

It looks like somebody ran a weld around the rear of the gearcase

Re: 1967 Golden Meteor 100 Hp lower unit

I think the shift wires have been cut and put back together without a removable connector at some point because I can't find any connectors by the thermostat but there are two wires that run down as shown in the previous pictures that have a butt connector on one and the other is another permanent connector that I'm not sure what the name is. I don't know is its bad to cut these again and resplice them when I'm through or not. And I also can't find a cover plate that I can see anything inside. I have one cover plate that is on the 2nd stage from the bottom up that I will post a picture of. Also there are two screws that are behind the rear exhaust housing cover but I can't get to them because they are behind the front cover and there is no access hole to get to them. I will post pictures of everything I have said so far. The picture with my fingers pointing into the metal are pointing at the cover plate with 2 screws that I can't get to.

Where your fingers are... that's supposed to be a cover allowing access to where the shift wires enter the exhaust housing. You could try pushing the wire in after appling dish soap as a lube. There is a spline in the wire between the gearcase and the extension that you will also need to disconnect but that is supposed to be done after gearcase removal
I've never seen that cover as being non-removeable

Sorry to sound ignorant but what wire should I try to push in after applying dish soap lube to where?

Cannot tell from your picture but the shift cable should be one green wire and one blue wire. OMC used "folding knife" connectors at that location. No telling what one of the PO's may have done with the cable. The only tip I have for you is to tie a strong string to the disconnected cable before pulling the lower unit. This will make it much easier to pull the cable back up through the exhaust housing during installation. Good luck!

Re: 1967 Golden Meteor 100 Hp lower unit

The access hole that is behind where my fingers are in the picture above that I cannot get to because the outermost housing does not have a hole to go through-- is that access hole just to help guide the wires when you drop the lower unit? Or does that hole serve another purpose like another disconnect spot or something? And thanks Willy clay, that will be of some huge help I'm sure.

Re: 1967 Golden Meteor 100 Hp lower unit

It is the spot where the wires go inside. Why yours doesn't have a cover that comes off is odd. Unless they made a change and the wires pas thru elsewhere.

Re: 1967 Golden Meteor 100 Hp lower unit

Got the lower unit off! and now starts the real reason I wanted to get it off... I've been having oil come out the water intake pipe after I run the motor. When i tilt it up out of the water, and drop in back into the down position oil drips/runs out the water intake. Any advice on where I should start my search for repairs to fix this problem? I think I'll be set to take it out on the water and have a good time once I get this fixed. Thanks

This oil, you're sure it is gear oil and not just unburned gas/oil? The water intake is in the leading edge of the exhaust snout.

Im not 100% sure that it is gear oil but it seams far too thick and its milky white so I'm about 99% its gear oil.

Exhaust residue has a burnt smell, but gear oil stinks to high heaven. What colour is the stuff in the gearcase.

Re: 1967 Golden Meteor 100 Hp lower unit

I have taken the impeller housing off and the gasket underneath the wear plate was destroyed, and there was a pretty fair amount of gear case oil sitting in the recession under the gasket. So I believe I now have to remove the bushing that goes around the driveshaft and replace it and get a new gasket. Can anyone show me where to find a lower unit seal kit for this motor because im having absolutely no luck. Thanks!
