Lower units compatible with my 1979 Johnson 75hp Stinger?

I'm having a helluva time finding a lower unit for my motor. What years and hp lower units will fit my 75hp?

I know 1979 was a changeover year...they changed from a 3-spline to a 4-spline shaft.

I've got a seller with a 90hp Johnson, but I have no idea if it'll fit.

Only 3-cylinder units will fit. No, 1979 was not the changeover year - never made one with a 3-spline shaft. Units from about 1978 to about 1988 will work. Before had different shift pattern, after had a fine spline shaft.

I'm almost positive that my 1978 Evinrude 75hp wont fit my 1979 Stinger.....but maybe I'm wrong. I have no idea who told me that 1979 was a changeover year...I guess I took the guy's word at face value.

That's good news if you're correct.

If 1978-1988 lower units are the same....does that mean that there was some change in 1978 rather than '79?

Here is interchange...
70/75............................(20 inch shaft)......................1978-late 1981
60/65/70/75................................................ .............1982-1988

It will fit but shifts backwards as its a hydromechanical shift

If you have the small "nitro" case only a couple of year models will fit and these where short shaft engines...
