Johnson 9.9, year?

Hello All,

I just bought a Johnson 9.9, model # MQ-14D, serial #J2963392 for $200. Was it a good deaL? I cannot find the year of this motor, any ideas? I need to fix the pull rope (it does not coil back) and have not looked into the repair yet? Any ideas on how best to proceed? Thank you!

1968 9.5 hp. It was a good mtr. If you can find an OEM factory service manual that would really help in the repair.

Those little motors are tanks! I have had 2 of them. I had a beautiful 1981 9.9, and it pushed my 14' jonboat the same speed as my 1969 9.5 did. Didnt plane out any easier!

if its in good running condition then yes its a good deal in my books. in my area i have seen guys asking anywhere from 300 to 450 i wouldnt give much more than 250. thats my opion im sure there is some people that dont agree. i have a 68 johnson 9.5 that i paid 75 for it it ran ok. i have a 71 evinrude 9.5 that i paid 200 for it runs great. i have since used parts of the 68 so i have only one complete and one partial motor. one of my pullstarts is not working like yours i have not taken it apart yet to see if its fixable. those motors have an exhaust boot that leaks and the exhaust gases come up inside the cowl and they wont run well. when i run in a barrel i need to run with the cowl off. the 68 model i ran on the water with the cowl off. as im sure you noticed they have a very low profile so if i run with cowl off i could not stop to quick or it would swamp the motor pretty good. if you need parts they are still for sell at a reasonable price.
