I have a 1971 4hp Johnson and set the points to .020 like advised. Then I came across a website "Leeroys Ramblings" he has an article on how to set the timing at WOT. I found that my timing marks were off and after opening the points to get the tic marks aligned, I am close to 030 gap now. It seems like it is one or the other. Help anyone?

leeroys ramblings is a great site!! on your little 4 hp, timing is timing, 020 at idle or wot is still 020. its all about about when those points open! with that said, if you mag plate is a bit loose, the timing can change dramatically as the plate wobbles.

Setting them at .020" gets them close enough in most cases. However, if you want to get them right on the money, that is what the marks are for. They are used with a special timing fixture tool. Once set with the tool, they are correct, and may or may not be .020". Believe the tool, not the feeler gage. Frank's Tools
