I'm slowly working my way through an old evinrude. I finally got the gear case off in order to check out the water pump. Definitely needs new impeller. It was difficult getting the gear case off. seemed like it was hung up a bit. Not the electric shift cable, I disconnected that in advance. I noticed that a bent metal ring was sitting on the water pump when I eventually got the lower unit off. I looked up inside the tube that the drive shaft goes in and near the top just under the power head I noticed a spring jammed in there. What could that be? I suppose I have to take the power head off.
