I know these questions must have been asked before...
lightest short shaft?
lightest long shaft?
easiest to repair?
Cheapest to repair?
Best performance for trolling?
etc.....

Here is my situation. I have two boats that I need motors for; one is a 1962 13' Grumman fisherman 15" transom. The other is a all original 1970 15' Starcraft startek center council 20" transom with original 1970 40hp Johnson. My two favorite lakes to fish have motor restrictions of 10hp or less. The short shaft would be a tiller and the other I would like to keep remote steering. Thanks in advance for any of your advice or suggestions. I realize this is a lot to ask for my first post but, you are the experts.

Thanks again,
Jay

The 1956 - 57 QD or Sportwins are the best 10's built, in my oppinion. Parts are cheap and they are easy to work on.

i also like the 1956-57 omc's, but they are a tad heavy! the early 1980's 9.9's are good motors, but do have the cdi ignition( not so expensive on that series as compared to later models), not so heavy and built rugged! jmo....avoid any of the 9.5 hp omc motors, those are oddballs, and no fun to work on!!

Believe it or not, there is hardly any difference in weight, between the late 50's 10hp motors and the 70's and newer 9.9's You'll be surprised.

Well, I did some looking and the early 80's 9.9 weighs in at 72 pounds and the '56/'57 vintage 10hp QD/Sportwins weigh in at 72 1/2. Pound for pound, I'll still take the older motor, since there are a lot less plastic parts and replacement parts are still cheaper.

Thanks everyone, this is GREAT info. and much appreciated. I just picked up a QD-18 a few weeks ago with a broken shift lever but, with the tank for $85.00 The guy said it ran just fine when it was stored 10 years ago. I have not done anything with it . Not an old outboard mechanic. YET! It is a long shaft and could possibly hook up to the steering on the startrek. Where there short shaft 10hp models made in those years?

Thanks again,
Jay

there are ss and ls 10 hp motors, but the lengths are different from modern motors. and zepher....i would have bet money that my sportwin was 15lbs heavier than an 80's 9.9! good info tho.....for when i hear " those old motors are so heavy!" lol

wonder what the performance difference would be? given two identical 12 foot tin boats, the 50's 10 or the later 80's 9.9?

i agree, the 50's run look really cool, easy to work on (i mean completely open) cheap parts. my guess is the only advantage to getting a newer model is the carb can be changed to up the top end rpm's.
