Hi guys once again I have a question. I have replaced the #2 coil four years ago #1 coil original #3 original. for the last 6 months or so I have had intermiten power loss but just here and there not for more than a minute or so and then fine. last sunday I was out and it happend again but never got power back back, gimped back four miles to the ramp. I love my boat she always gets me home if a problem occurs. Now home I started all the checks, found that the #2 coil has no spark. Is this just dumb luck or what could cause this to go bad in four years.

If missed 1980 70HP three cylinder

:confused::confused:

Thanks once again for any imput

Re: 70 HP 1980 johnson bad coil

The coil I replaced has a part #528508 As I look on here this is the wrong coil it is for 1985-2001 could this be why it has failed after 4 years. I am suprised it has worked all this time. So now what brand mallory,CDI,or sierra?

Im thinking CDI part #183-2366 Is this correct?

Swap #2 coil with a good coil. If the problem follows the coil...then you'll know.

Sometimes it takes us a day or two to cover all the bases so to speak.

Your coil original part number was 581998 and superseded up thru the number of 582330, 582366, 583737, to the present part number of 584561. I have no idea how you received the coil #582508 (It's not 528508). Coil 584561 is the one you need (Bombardier).

I have no idea of CDI's number but Sierra's interchange coil would be 18-5176.

Any input on why a coil would go out in four years but the original are still good

As "BonairII" suggests, switch coils first to see if the non firing coil will fire in on of the other locations. If it does, then obviously the coil is okay.

If it proves to be bad, I would have no idea why it failed.

Could be a myriad of reasons...bad luck, defective coil, plug wire came loose while motor was running, etc etc.

No points on the model.

Before replacing the powerpack, check all of the connections, rubber plug pins and sockets, etc. Those pins/sockets are known to back out slightly in the rubber plugs... check to make sure that both items are where they belong and are making perfect contact.

Also the wires leading to those pins/sockets have been know to break off from the pins/sockets but stay in the plugs due to pure friction (tight fit). The wire appears to be attached but it is not.

No spark on one cyl on that mtr could be coil, pack or sensor.
