Hey All,
I am new to the boating world as well as small engine mechanics.
I have an 8hp Johnson J8RLEDS that hasn't run in a couple of years. Completely salted up from a long life of ocean cruising only.
I've replaced the impeller with the full kit (grommets, new plate, gaskets)
I've replaced the thermostat with the full kit (this one you have to piece together)
I've replaced the head gasket
I've replaced all of the exhaust gaskets
I've replaced the tell tale hose (it was just in shambles)
What I can't seem to figure out is why there is still steam (or possibly exhaust) coming from the tell tale. I've run the engine with and without the thermostat it doesn't matter.
The pee hole runs pretty constant unless I jack up the RPMS then eventually it just turns to Steam/Exhaust.
The intake is a screen that I think looks pretty clear. When I had the lower unit off I ran air through the copper tube leading up to the engine and could feel it coming out of the tell tale.
The water jackets look pretty clear around the cylinders.
The exhaust plates were crudded up pretty good. There was a lot of this white crusty stuff in there that I scrapped out.
I think the next thing I need to do is a compression test because maybe the exhaust plate or exhaust cover is warped?
Does anyone else have any other suggestions?
Anyone recommend a good compression tester? I've heard the harbor freight ones can be pretty inaccurate because the hose is really long
Thank you all kindly!
