Got a good price on a used 1970 Johnson 60 HP outboard on ebay. Starts up, runs smooth, got forward, and reverse, but NO neutral. Anyone got any ideas?

I would investigate the control unit, it should not start in gear and obviously it does and maybe that is where the fault lies. If you have the electric shift in the lower unit it may be a wiring issue.

Check the voltage on the two wires (Green and Blue), on the port side of the motor. Located on the lower side near the back. They control the shift solenoids. No voltage to either is Forward, Voltage to the green (12V) is Neutral and voltage to both green and blue should be reverse.

If not, hunt down Joe Reeves to help you. He is the pro for these models.
