Cycles in and out of forward on a 72 Johnson 65 HP

I looked at thread http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/1972-johnson-65-hydro-electric-shift-441143.html for some info. Good thread and will try those next time at Dad's place.

he has a similar problem, but doesn't stay in forward, it cycles in and out. No reverse either. This happens regardless of whether or not the shifter is in neutral or forward. Would we follow the same tests or might there be something different?

Turns out Dad didn't have enough oil in the lower unit. I pimpled more in until the oil came out the upper hole, it works fine now.
