I recently bought a 1967 evinrude fisherman 6hp, used it once and almost got stuck on the lake. It ran great getting out there but to get back to shore I had to play with the choke to keep it going. I replaced the gas/oil 50:1 mix and took apart the carb to give it a quick clean. Upon further inspection I realized that the throttle had no effect on how high or low the engine rev'd. It starts great but dies shortly after if you aren't constantly adjusting the choke.

Has anyone else had this issue? If it is the throttle am I looking at an expensive repair?

You need to pull the carb apart and clean it thoroughly, and rebuild it.

I agree with above post. Use lots of carb cleaner and spray it into very port from both directions. Then follow with compressed air from both directions. A new kit is a good idea while you have it apart. Do a very thorough job of it and you will have eliminated the dirty carb. as your problem. If it runs good great and if not you can look elsewhere for the solution. Best of luck. Rick.
