I'm trying to change out water pump on a long Shaft, 79 Johnson, Model # 35EL78R. I have loosen the two bolts holding the coupler, but shift control rod (s) won't slide out. Do you have to take the bolts all the way out or just loosen them? Afraid to take them all the way out, looks like the coupler would fall into housing??
Thanks in advance,
Ed

Take the top bolt all the way out, yes you have to take it completely out the shift rod has a channeled grove the bolt goes through when installed. put a blob of grease in your socket and it will keep the bolt held upon removal.
