I have a 1977 75hp Evinrude. My problem with this motor is that when I start it up and drive a little bit, then put the motor into neutral and let it idle, the engine starts to speed up faster and faster. So its almost impossible to put the motor into gear with out the gears slamming into place. Any ideas what I need to do to slow down the engine speed? I am wondering if I just need to turn some screws? Please help. Thanks

Pull the cowling and watch the linkage on the starboard side. If it moves of its own accord, resulting in the increased RPM, then your issue is likely sloppy linkage, advancing due to vibration.

Ok Thank you for the reply!! If it is sloppy linkage how would I fix the problem? I am still convinced that I just need to adjust the carb screws but not 100% sure. I just no nothing about boat motors and I don't want to take to a boat mechanic because they charge $$$$$
