Johnson 88hp cylinder head cover gasket question

Hi all. I have what seem like a silly question but I want to make sure I put the gaskets on correctly. Service manual for motor says to apply gasket sealing compound to the cylinder head cover gasket and install. My question is: Do I brush the sealing compound to the whole gasket area on both sides? Thanks in advanced for you help

Mine have normally come with it on there, looks like a thin bead around the gasket but if the manual says so id say both sides but thinly.
