O.k. after realizing I'm going to have to remove power head to repair a carbon seal on my 25302A Evinrude of the same year, I have decided to try and get my "parts Motor" to fire. I bought an old boat as a restoration project this winter. Got the whole boat, trailer and this 18 horse for $300 with the understanding that the motor was only good for parts. Seeing as how it uses many of the same parts as my 25, I considered it a nice bonus. This 18 was originally equipped with electric and manual start. However, the electric starter has been removed. The motor is very dirty, which is a little concerning as well. The lower unit is free and has no evidence of water. Did a compression test and I have 100 psi exactly on both cylinders. There is no fire on either cylinder however. Now, the obvious issue is the "stop" switch is missing. Only the female side remains attached. I am concerned there may be an ignition issue as there was an old condenser laying in bottom cover. First things first. Can I jump out the stop switch to make sure that's not where I'm losing my fire? Try to add pics below of switch although Ive not had much luck with pics on this site.

HI carpking. Wow, seems to be 18-20 hp ignition issue night here in the forums :) Not to worry, they're great motors and well worth the effort. Here are some great links that an walk you through an entire ignition rebuild and an overall tune up. You can get any parts you may need for the job right here at iboats. Holler if you get stuck.

No pics Carp. You can't email pics to your thread, it doesn't work. You need a photo storage account like Photobucket. Most pics you see here are through PB.

Pull the starter and take a peek in the flywheel at the coils, points and condensers. Replace and adjust as needed.

If you pull the flywheel you can remove the kill switch wires and just stop the motor with the choke like earlier motors. If the wires are not grounding out to the switch (open circuit) the switch will not effect spark.
