No reverse on 1961 qd-22 johnson

My Johnson qd-22 will go into reverse but when you turn the throtle engine just revs up and will not move. I had it out last year and drifted to close to the bank, so i started it and i hit some rock. It will go forward fine, my question is where do i start to look why it doesnt go in reverse. I was hoping i just knocked it out adjustment or something. Does anyone know if this sounds like a searious problem. Thank you.

Are you shifting this manually at the motor or via remote control? If remote control, try unhooking the cable and shifting it manually, will it now work? If so, cable issue or remote control box.

If you still get no reverse shifting manually, start by opening the port on the leg to view the shift rod coupler. The detent should be centered perfectly in the bottom hole. There should be minimal up/down slop in the shift rod. Disconnect the coupler and use needle nose pliers to shift the lower rod, will it now engage reverese gear?

If all is well there, time to open up the gearcase and see what is going on.
