There have been a number of posts regarding the appropriate fuel mixture for old outboards. I have a fuel tank for a 1953 Evinrude 15 hp outboard (acquired new). The 5 gallon tank says to mix 1 quart of SAE #30 oil with the gasoline (i.e., 20:1). Hope this is useful to people acquiring old outboards.

Hi, Ronald.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The most recent recommendations for Evinrude motors prior to 1964 are 24:1 with TC-W3 rated outboard oil. SAE#30 hasn't been recommended for over 50 years.

Using a 20:1 mix would be only slightly rich and do no harm.

Had a 1953 15HP Evinrude used 1 qt to 5 gallons , but used 2cycle oil . Was at a place that I couldn't get 2cycle oil ,used sae 30(non-detergent) once, but you have to keep it mixed let it set overnite and the oil will be at the bottom of tank.

I actually remember the days when I could use the same oil in my grandpa's old 18 evenrude that I used in my 1948 Chevy. Quart of #30 to 6 gal gas, and 6 quarts of #30 in the crankcase.
