There were two very different gearcases used on that motor. "Standard" and "Heavy Duty". Neither is particularly difficult to assemble, but buying it in a basket gives you a disadvantage because you didn't see it being disassembled. Besides, how many parts are missing? I suppose much depends on your mechanical aptitude. Can you make sense of an exploded parts book view? Or would you need detailed step-by-step instructions?

The V4-60 was a good value back in it's day. Very basic, reliable, and simple. Also thirsty and heavy for the horsepower, compared to newer motors. I assume you would be getting it dirt cheap? Better consider why the guy tore it apart and never put it back together. One reason might be worn out parts that were too expensive to replace. Hopefully he didn't get sick or die or something.
