I have a 1985 Evinrude 115 that the Regulator is fried. There is actually a hole in the unit. Any way I have a 1971 50 HP Johnson parts motor. Is there any way to make the Regulator off the 50 work on the 115 so I'll be able to charge the batteries. Are there any other lower cost ways of fixing this with out haing to buy the 250-300 dollar part.

Are you sure that 50 has a regulator? It should have a 3-phase rectifier (not the same thing as a voltage regulator).

Your 115 has a regulator and your 50 has a rectifier. You could try it and see what happens but I never did. Check the top secert files at the beginning of this forum and look for salvage yards. There was a difference in the stators between the mtrs.

Yeah I believe your right, the 50 is a rectifier. I'll look for some used regulators some where. Also, how hard are they to install, it looks like you have to pull the flywheel?

If your 115 has power trim, it will have the combination rectifier/regulator. It sits atop the block between the V-banks. You'll have to remove the flywheel to replace it. A standard automotive 3-legged puller should do the trick. You'lll want to replace the gasket when you repl the rect/reg.

Hey guys. I did find a cheaper regulator. I was wondering if I could wire it up with out taking the old one out. Basically I was looking to avoid pulling the flywheel, just mounting the new on in a different spot.

If you can find a place to install it, go for it. But as my old Mentor used to say, " do it right or don't do it at all".

You didn't say what the "cheaper" regulator is. Is it the same kind as what's there now, or something different? The kind that is there now is water cooled and has to be located there for that reason. There is water circulating below it.
