First off hello all! This seems like a great place to help and be helped, as of right now I am in need of some aid.

Bought a boat and was told tilt and trim did not work. When had the boat serviced for the first time had them fill it with fluid. It worked fine for a while then started getting weaker then stopped altogether. Obviously there is a seal problem somewhere.

I found a local place that will rebuilt the cylinders for about 120$ total for both. Which I did not think was bad since I do not have the tools to do this and can not find the seal kit either.

If i could fine the right parts and tool, i maybe inclined to try but have never rebuilt a cylinder before?

The pump I assume works good, because well it worked fine while it had fluid. Can you also rebuild the reservoir though? Is it worth it to mess with this or have this done? Or would the only leak point be the cylinder seals?

Also can you actually get the cylinders out individually or are they built into the whole system and need to take the whole tilt trim mechanism off to take to rebuild?

there are four or five different systems. your description sounds like the one with separate pump and two cylinders on the outside of transom mounting brackets. if that is your system, the motor and reservoir are sold as a single piece and are usually ruined if you separate them.

a picture or thumbnail would help.

more than gopod enough. that is a 2 ram system with prestolite pump. Used on various engines from early 1970's through late 1980's.

first thing to do is hotwire the trim motor and see if the pump works. any old car or lawn tractor battery will do.
black is common ground. blue is up. green is down.

Agree-do RRitt's test first. If the cyls are in need of overhaul: Bombardier sells an o-ring rebuild kit for that old trim system: the original number kit 172575 supercedes to 174520. This is a kit for the two pistons. Other orings for sealing the pump/reservoir are sold separately. If you can borrow/rent a spanner wrench and an original factory service manual, you might want to tackle this yourself. Check out: outboardbooks.com

Thanks for the input guys! I know the pump works because we put fluid in it and it worked til it all leaked out!

This maybe a dumb question but I can not find where to search for particular part number on bombadier website?

Online parts diagrams are common. Go to an online OMC dealer and look up by engine.

In general, rebuilding rams is DIY friendly and can often be done while they are still on boat. trim motors can be rebuilt but it isn't worth the effort. Parts are so expensive that savings are about about $10 per hour. pumps are a difficult rebuild and should be sent out. hoses should be replaced if frayed.

Where can you send them off to be rebuilt?

The 76 factory parts exploded diagrams show the tilt/trim system. Check out this website: epc.brp.com
