Hi Guys,

I have a 1975 Johnson 50 HP outboard that is stuck in forward. It happen when we were on our last fishing trip.

I have changed the oil with a type "c" gear oil.

I have also tested the wiring from the knife connectors and the green wire is open circuit. The blue wire is 5 ohms.

My questions is their any other connection or terminals between the knife connectors and the solenoids or has the forward solenoid gone bad.

also does anyone have a manual for the lower unit and leg so we can remove the lower unit if needed.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: 1975 Johnson 50hp open circuit on neutral solenoid

Do you have the model number of your engine? If you are sure that it is a 1975:

Shift solenoids (31 and 35) should be
checked with an ohmmeter. Resistance
should be 5-6 ohms when checked between
each of the wires and solenoid
case. If solenoid or wires (23) are renewed,
use new heat shrink insulating
tubes (30 and 34) to seal wire connections

Here is a link to the condensed version of the Clymer manual which will help you with the LU. Download it soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.

Agreed. My 1975 50hp Johnson is not an electric shift. There are only 2 models listed for 1975, a long shaft and a short shaft. Model numbers are 50ES75 ans 50ESL75.

1972 was the last hydraulic-electric shift outboard made.

That should help you tremendously now that you have the correct year to work with.

thanks for the quick reply's

is it more likely to be a broken wire or do the solenoids go completely open circuit.

thanks

Hi Gerry and bonz_d,

Thanks for your reply's and help

It was only a broken wire at the connector to the solenoid, It took longer to undo the nuts on the lower unit than it did to fix.

once again thanks.
