1960 Johnson question

I was reading somewhere that said the only difference between the 18 hp & the 25 hp 1960 Johnson seahorse was the carb. The article said the bore and stroke were exactly the same. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Is it the case?

Zapit, the myth goes on. I assume you are speaking of the 22 cubic inch 25hp of later years. Yes the bore and stroke are the same as your 18 but there are a few differences. Chief among them are:

Carburetor
Cylinder head
Pistons
Rings
Crankshaft
Tuned Exhaust housing

Re: 1960 Johnson question

I see F_R.. Thought I might get lucky and swap a carb to get 25hp.. guess I'll have to live with my 18 which is just fine really.. wouldn't mind the extra HP for when I'm really loaded down though. Thanks for the info!

You might be able to help the motor out with a prop change and fine tuning your setup.
Also if your running a bare utility a larger utility should do better with a load.
