Older Evinrude Identification

I just picked up an older evinrude. 25 HP, at least according to the cowling. The unit is in rough shape but it turns and I need a project. Problem is there isn't any identification plate anywhere to find out what model or year. Does anyone have any idea on how to identify this without it? I want to get a manual as the wiring will need to be redone at minimum.

Post a pic if both the welsh plug on the powerhead and the ID plate on the transom clamp are missing.

High Trim,

Thanks for getting back. I'm not sure what a welsh plug is but I will take a few pics and post them this evening. Not sure where the id plate is as it is missing. from what I've read it should be as you said on the transom clamp. I see an area that stands a little proud in the casting and has two holes that looks like something was riveted there so I assume this is where the plate should have been.

Thanks All. Great website resource. Now I have some other questions regarding the value of getting this thing running. I will post a new thread since it does not pertain to identification. Out

Re: Older Evinrude Identification

Well, unfortunately, the 25 I posted is not mine. I got these from nymarine. I was just being a goofball and telling the OP what an "older 25" is. LOL I do however have a nice, unrestored '57 model 35 that looks good still. :D This one here is actually mine. The old blue and white Evinrudes are my favorite model years, eventhough I'm one motor shy of having the 1955 Johnson product line.

your bigtwin is in good shape. i personally prefer the johnsons, but still like them all up to 59/60. still undecided what to do with some.....keep as found....or restore. heres a sportwin i recently acquired....needs the usual going over, but may just keep as is.( is this a highjack on the thread?....or is it ok since the op abandoned this one for a new one?? lol)

ahhh, no worries. Looks like the OP has things figured out and if he comes back, we'll help him out, right? We'll have our own fun till that happens.:D

That's a nice looking little Sporty there, nwcove. I just recently acquired a 1955 Johnson QD. I like the '57 Sportwins. Nice lookin' old motors. I got a 1955 Fleetwin going today that was stuck, when I brought it home. I got it, along with 5 other motors, about 3 weeks ago. I upgraded the ignition system with two good used coils and cleaned the mag assembly up and got a nice runner, for about 25 bucks. It's the second one from the right. The old ugly 14hp Fastwin next to it is a great runner too. The Sportman on the left is a nice little runner too. The one next to it, still needs to be freed up and running. The JW-10, in the middle was stuck and missing a head, but it's freed up now and I'm getting a head tomorrow. The Fleetwin next to it, is beeing traded off tomorrow and it's a runner.

wheres' Yamhill ??? would you consider a '66 40hp ? i started a project boat for my son (w/ his help) but he crapped out on me . seems like chasing skirts is more fun . ,...it fires up , all new tuneup parts , but i had no clue where the starter sel. should've been mounted and had it directly under the carb . needless to say what happened the next time i 'fired' her up . it still starts up but , she'll need new wiring . my40johnny'73.jpgmy40hpjohnny'73.jpg, RD28B
