Just got a 2 hp motor that was missing the recoil starter spindle screw that holds the recoil assembly to the engine cover. So obviously the recoil starter did not work. I rewound the spring and rope and attached the spindle and pulley to the engine cover with a generic nut and bolt. It seems that the pulley and spindle are held solidly against the engine cover even though there is a little play in the pulley. But if I work the pull cord in and out several times, the end of the spring will slip up out of the slot and be pulled into the interior - there's just enough play in the pulley so that it will lift slightly and let the spring lift out of the slot.
Will the OEM spindle screw make a difference or is something else going on? I'm tempted to just drill a hole in the engine cover and bolt the end of the spring in place.
What is the length and thread of the spindle screw?
Thanks....
