I have my lower unit off to the change water pump but it looks ok, impellor looks fine, should it just lift off also? seems stuck, just a lots of sand (I was in the Shallows of Barnegat Bay) Should I change or just clean? Gaskets are stretched a little. also housing for shift rod is stuck tight I wanna get a look inside. It should just lift off after bolts are off right?, should I or not go into shift rod housing? It was very tight to shift before I took off lower unit. Engine is a 1987 Johnson 88 SPL

1987 with lots of sand........replace complete pump.

Nothing to see under the shift shaft housing. No need to remove it unless you want to change the oil seal. Nothing there to cause hard shifting. If its only hard shifting when NOT running, its because your not supposed to shift when its not running!

If its hard to shift when running, disconnect the shift cables and check them as well as the linkages for stiffness.

As long as the g/c is off, rotate the prop shaft and see if it shifts easy. If not, easy to repair now.
