I just gave this 1956 Evinrude 15HP outboard engine a complete tune up, coils, wires, plugs, points, etc. Along with new seals, O-rings in the lower gear case and a complete new water pump.
I did grease up the O-rings, Seals, and gear shifter control arm linkage before & during install.
So some of that grease could be from that. But would water be coming out there?
Here?s a short video I posted on You Tube of this problem:

Open to your ideas and suggestions!
Thank you in advance.

The oring is your issue, but short of tearing it apart, some extra grease should help slow it down some.

The leakage itself is harmless. Lack of lubrication caused by the grease washing out will acclelerate wear. Use good waterproof marine grease and you should be ok. Or fix it.

Might add, if it already is worn out and sloppy, a new o-ring won't help.

I concur with F_R. Ever time I redo one of these older engines I put a new shift lever o-ring on it, most end up still leaking at least a little.

This site amazes me! I've been on here forever and don't recall ever seeing this problem.
And here we have 4 informative responses in less than 24 hours. And this on a 50+ year old motor
that was in production something like 2 years.
