EVINRUDE 9.5hp 1973 shifting problem

Hello my Evinrude 9.5hp will not shift into forward.Neutral and reverse work fine. I tried the adjustment for the shift lever next to the flywheel.I believe the problem is in the lower unit.Before i tear into it,any ideas what to look for?? thanks john

Is the motor running when you are shifting? If not, then spin the prop with your foot or something while trying to shift. (unplug the plug wires just in case) Also make sure the throttle is in the shift position. Hope this helped

I did try it both ways, running and not running.When not running i try to spin thr prop and shift.I just get neutral and reverse. I am going to have o open up where the gears are to see if anything is broken,like a shift craddle.Was just hoping to get an idea from someone who may know. thanks john
