Hi everyone, I've been lurking for a while and hope I can get some help. I'm building a 10' mahogany runabout using the Glen-L "Squirt" plans and am at the point where I need to purchase a steering system and steering wheel, before I can get any further. I have a 1957 Evinrude 18 hp that I'll be using and am planning on using the Teleflex system http://www.wholesalemarine.com/p/TEL-SS13711/#readmore.

My question is, how do I attach the cable to the outboard? I've seen a few ways done where people fabricated their own attachments, but I have no welding experience or tools. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Here's the album of my build so far: https://picasaweb.google.com/104371500800552620455/AnthonySBoatBuild

Very nice build. Welcome to iboats.

Please consider giving us 4 photos here with the last one being a completed picture ;) http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=568781

Check out Lowcostboatingstore.com which is a cheaper uflex steering system and comes with a free steering wheel much better then the one you selected.

When you install a single cable system there are two routes you can take. The first one is to either purchase or make your own one of these to hold the cable in place http://www.iboats.com/Teleflex-Stee...27634251--session_id.965177850--view_id.47748 Now you could do it with muffler clamps to hold the cable but you do not want any crimping pressure on the cable so you need to use something that will grasp the cable evenly. I have seen people use 2 muffler clamps and a piece of pipe cut down the middle.

The other method is this one http://www.iboats.com/Front-Mount-S...27634251--session_id.965177850--view_id.40159 which gives you a tube to run the cable through.

Then you are going to need a steering link piece which I recommend ebay for cheaper cost but it looks like this http://www.iboats.com/T-R-Steering-...27634251--session_id.965177850--view_id.40158 fairly universal and ebay is cheapest.

Now in the front of the motor you can bolt on a 2" piece of aluminum angle (stainless is MUCH better if you can get a short piece) and bolt it to the steering / carry arm on the motor and drill a hole through that to connect the steering link arm. Sounds complicated but it is easy and then you have it. steering.jpg (click on image)

Thanks for the reply, and I'll definitely post photos in the thread when it's complete!

I have seen setups of the second option you mentioned, and that looks pretty clear to me. For the first option though, do you place the cable attachment directly onto the outboard handle?
