Preparing to replace the water pump impeller in my '87 150 Hp Johnson outboard. Watched a couple of YouTube videos where they mention OMC Gasket Sealer compound. Can I simply use Permatex Blue RTV Silicone Gasket Maker instead? Also, somewhat concerned about re-attaching the shift linkage. From the videos it looks like one needs to have to motor in forward gear, not neutral. Can someone explain why?

Thanks!

Speaking from the refence of a 'Rude 140 from 1980, manual says "forward", I believe so that people remember to have both parts in the same gear. Forward is a smidge simpler for "playing" the two back together during reassembly, should you need to. I didn't use a silicone gasket so "no comment" there.

Use Permatex #3. Works the same as gasket sealing compond.
