I have a 1962 28 hp johnson and every time I start it and put it in gear it breaks the drive pin in the propeller. It is my first motor and It seams to idle very high even with the throttle all the way down as far as it would go. It really jerks hard when you put it in gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Re: 1962 johnson 28 hp drive pin question

I suspect that you are using the wrong drive pin (shear pin), possibly brass? The proper drive pin is steel and is part number 304575... a drive pin of such strength that it is not known to break easily.

On a flushette, the engine should idle at about 1000 rpm, when actually in the water the idle rpm should be somewhere around 700 rpm.

Perhaps you need to adjust the throttle cable at the engine and/or the idle stop screw (mechanical stop).... someone could simply have it set too high.
