1956 Evinrude 15 HP model #15016

I just bought this engine, along with a 12? Sea King. This is my first!
I took it out over the weekend and starts easy, seem to run good.
Does seem to need more RMP?s when I open her up?

I would like to service the engine, not knowing when it was last serviced.
I noticed on the lower section it says, ?Hypoid Oil Only?. Never heard of this!
What should I use?

Also is there an air cleaner / filter?
Anything else I should know would be appreciated.

Also thinking about repainting the engine cover. Faded colors

Thank you!
Kevin

Gas-oil mix is at least 24:1 with that motor with TC-W3 two-cycle oil.
Lower unit (gearcase) oil is 85-90W marine gear oil.
No air cleaner.
Change the water pump impeller if you don't know how old it is.

+1 .Hi Kevin. Welcome to iboats. Cool old motor you got there. In addition to tx's advice check your spark. I think you may be dropping a cylinder. If the coils have never been changed, then they need to be inspected. You should be get a nice bight blue spark that can jump a 1/4" gap. Here are some great links to help you give that old gem a tune up from tip to bottom. You can get any routine parts you may need right here at iboats too. Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.

Re: 1956 Evinrude 15 HP model #15016

Thank you for the links & info.
I saved them for future use. It's been pushing over the 100 mark here in the Chicago area, so it's to darn hot to do anything right now. Plus the wife said "NO" for working on the engine in the kitchen. LOL!

I was thinking about the water pump / impeller also. So I think I'll order all the parts for a complete tune up, oil change, and water pump rebuild.

I've posted some pictures at this link:
http://www.marineengine.com/boat-pi...15hp-evinrude/p445-label-inside-eng-cove.html

Didn't see any place on this sight for posting pic's. I'll add more over the next few days on their web sight.

Would it hurt the value of the engine if I where to repaint it? or should I leave it as is?

We're in the middle of the monsoon down here in FL. You can post pics right here on iboats. There are several ways, but just hit the "Go Advanced" button then click on the attachment/paperclip icon and then upload the pics. Don't worry you're no the only one who has tried to work on their motor in the house :) As far as hurting the value of the motor, they're not worth that much one way, or the other. If anything, a very nice paint job will only increase the value. However, with very few exceptions, boats and the motors that go with them are famous for NOT holding their value, so don't expect to get much of your money back. You can get period correct paint and decals from sites like NYmarine.com, or paint it whatever color(s) you like. All you need to do is give it a good cleaning to remove all grease and oils, followed by sanding and a light coat of Zinc Chromate Self-Etching Aluminum primer then the top coat(s). It's not that hard, but like all paint jobs it's in the prep.

I hope things have improved down in Florida. Still hot & humid in the Chicago area.

As for posting pictures here, I must be missing something. I can?t find ?Go Advanced? on any of these web pages. I even looked under My Profile and Settings!

I did pick up a quart or 80/90 Marine Gear Oil last Friday at Cabelas. That?s all they had.
Saturday, I unscrewed the 2 plugs to drain the gear oil. OUCH! Nothing but water came out, not even one drop of oil.

Yes! They where the right drain screws.
I know that?s not a good thing. I was a diesel macanic back in the 80?s, so I got the basics down on this.

I did fill the unit with about a ? qt oil. What a pain to fill. I?m thinking it would be a lot easier with a siphon tube to transfer and top off.

I also noticed that the fiber rings on the screws looked old & worn. I replaced them with neoprene washers which are a nice snug fit. Thinking, that may be the oil leaked out there and allowed water in.

I also put the engine in gear, and dry pulled the cord a few times to stir up the oil and coat the gears.
Seeing I?m getting ready to order the points, condenser, and impeller, are there any seals, gaskets, or ?O? rings that I should also order and replace to keep the water out?

Thank you in advance.
Kevin

The washers on the drain and vent screws are crush washers and are a 1 time use. They can be bought from your local dealer. After a run, remove the drain screw. Dont remove the vent. If water is present, it will exit first, as it is heavier than the oil and sits in the bottom of the resevoir, and a reseal may be in order. Will cross that bridge when it comes.

Changing the gear oil is a breeze. Best if you have the proper pump though. Just screw the pump into the bottom, drain hole, and pump until it exits the top, vent hole. Screw in vent screw, remove pump, and screw in drain screw. All done, about a minute.

Must say your "Top Secret Files" are loaded with info. I thank you for all the time you put into them.
Sorry to inform you that your secret is out!! LOL

I assure you that only water drained out of the lower hole. No oil!

If I'm going to open up the unit, I would rather install new parts then, versas having to find other problems down the road and do it all over again. Plus I would rather place one order for parts, than having to place another order and wait for them after a tear down for a week or two.

I'll have to find a pump to fill the gear case the right way. My local Wal-mart doesn't stock much for marine.

Re: 1956 Evinrude 15 HP model #15016

Read & viewed your link on on the lower gear case.
Just a suggestion from my past experance:
To install or remove seals, bushings, or bearings, use a socket.
Just make sure it's a little smaller than the outside diameter of the seal or bearings.
I prefer deepwell sockets for this, but reg. ones work fine. If you need to reach
into a unit, just use an extension on the socket, and pound on that.

My lower unit had no oil, just water came out. 4 days ago I drained it, and did fill it
with marine oil. Everyday I checked for leaks.
Today I noticed a few drops of oil. It looks like the oil is coming from behind the prop.

I'm assuming a total rebuild, cleaning, and new seals from the water pump down to the prop.

Your Top Secret Files ( http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680 ) is loaded with great info!
Thank you!

Iboats.com Parts Section for Evinrude is a bit confusing on ordering parts
http://www.iboats.com/Evinrude-Outboard-Parts/dm/view_id.268670

Evinrude Water Pump Repair Kits I don't see anything listed for my 15hp, 1956.

I did find the Impeller, http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=109112&gd_row=24&session_id=762063125

I noticed it's the same impeller as the 18 & 20hp engine.
Question????
Do you think the water pump repair kit, (listed 18HP) would be the same on my 15HP that's NOT listed?

On the Magneto coil which MFG do you suggest?
CDI Ignition Coil, Sierra Ignition Coil, or Mallory Ignition Coil

Plug wires I'm pretty sure I can get at any Auto parts store.

I can't find anything for the Evinrude Lower Unit Seal Kits.
Open to suggestions!!!

Re: 1956 Evinrude 15 HP model #15016

You can compare part numbers here.

'56 - 15 hp http://www.marineengine.com/parts/v...evinrude-johnson/ITEM_2747/ITEM_274700001.htm

'57 - 18 hp http://www.marineengine.com/parts/v...evinrude-johnson/ITEM_2833/ITEM_283300001.htm

Coils anyone works fine. I used Sierra.

Plug wires - use 7mm copper core, not resistor wire like automotive wires.

Contact HighTrim using the private message feature for a lower unit seal kit.

Great motors, easy to work on and they run smooth.

Good luck and have fun.
