I recently bought a 64 Elgin runabout with an early 50's Evinrude 40hp. I drained the lower end oil, squeezed in a new q of 90 weight and there is now something blocking the hole...Is there an easy answer to this?!

Can't replace lower drain plug back in Evinrude lower end!

Can't replace lower drain plug back in Evinrude lower end!

I recently bought a '64 Elgin runabout with an early 50's Evinrude 40hp motor. I drained the lower end gear oil and squeezed in a Q of 90 weight but when I tried to replace the lower plug there was something blocking the hole inside, possibly the shifter lever!? Is this a simple fix?!

See that larger regular slot type screw at the bottom front of the lower unit skeg? That's the drain/fill screw.

The screw you removed is the pivot shoulder screw for the internal shift lrever linkage.

Oh, how many times has that happened?? They put a Phillips head on it so people won't be taking it out, and they take it out anyway. That is NOT the drain plug. The drain plug is on the bottom of the nose cone.

Good luck getting it back in, in may take some finagaling.

Remove the old gaskets from the drain and vent holes. Put the new gaskets on the plug and try again.

Your motor is early 60's BTW

Thanks for the info Admiral. There is something metal that looks as though it has come down and blocked the hole deep inside. What do vent holes and gaskets have to do with that?

Uh oh. Sounds like you removed the pivot screw. Oh well, no biggie. Just take a small screw driver and line the holes back up. If you cant see the hole on the shift fork inside, them slowly move the shift lever forward or backward until you see it start to line up. Once you do, then use your little screwdriver to line the holes up perfectly and put your pivot screw back in. The only screws you're supposed to remove to drain the oil, are the larger slothead screws. See items 30 and 46 on the attachment.

I have merged your two threads, 26tk. Please do not post multiple threads, they really confuse helpers.

Work the shift lever, maybe use an ice pick to align the hole. Worst case lay the motor on it's side.
