1986 Evinrude 70 hp tach not reading correctly

Just purchased this motor and the tach moves but it nevers goes over 2500 rpm.
Not sure what to check next. Rectifier test OK but only getting 8.5 volts on purple wire to tach. Can I get 12 volts from a hot wire from the battery? Any help would be great

First thing to check is the Pole setting on the tach. It should be set at the 6 postion

The tach is an older OMC model and there is not any adjustments on it.

Will the low voltage affect the tach?

Try running a jumper wire to the tach and see what happens.

Tryed running 12 volt to tach and still does not work

If your charging system is okay, it might be time for a new tach.
