ANy ideas why this would happen? my first guess is the gearcase and would need to replace the lower unit which is like $1100 new, was hoping maybe someone might be able to give me some other options or a website that sells used parts or a place near harrisburgh PA that does. thanks

Drop the lower unit and check that the connector has not 'failed' and disconnected the shift rods.

Has someone recently replaced the water pump impeller? If so, possibly the mechanic did not get he shifting rod is deep enough into the coupler.

And FYI... that shift rod is threaded into the LU. My manual said nothing about that and it wasn't until I read it on LeeRoy's page that I figured out why my shift rod seemed too long. I could only get N+R or F+N until I hand tightened it all the way back in. Now it's right on.

Good luck, hope it helps.
