1979 25 hp evinrude slipping in and out of gear

Motor keeps slipping out of gear in forward, it will go to nutral for a second and then pop back in, if i hold the shift lever forward it stays. Any quick ideas before a rip the LU apart?

Worn forward gear and clutch dog or loose or sloppy shift linkage.

In the lower unit under the shift dog there is a spring and two dedent balls, check to make sure they're there, and or not held in place by crud. They were added to prevent such problems.
