I have a 1982 35 hp evinrude and I am trying to replace the impeller. I took the 5 bolts out put in reverse and loosened the nut behind the screen on the lower unit. There is a little black fitting on the end of the shaft drive that wont let the nut come off to drop the lower unit. Do i just rip the black piece off? If so where can i get a replacement black piece? Any help is much appreciated thanks.

Don't rip it off. The black plastic thing is actually split, and it's just hard to tell. You can separate it and slip it off the shift shaft. Once off, you can slide the shift shaft out. If you lose them, go to some part diagrams at marineengine.com or crowleymarine.com and get the part number. You can then actually buy it from iboats or wherever.
