Newbie needs help with 1996 Johnson 115 Fast Strike Powerhead

I'm trying to help my brother find out information on his 96 Johnson 115 motor. He lost compression in one cylinder and the mechanic is telling him he needs to replace the powerhead. The cheapest he can find is $2,300. Our question is can the existing powerhead be rebuilt by us or are we looking at buying a used/new one?

The best thing to do is get yourself an OMC Factory Service Manual and go from there. Very good repair info in them. Stay away from Seloc or Clymer. They Suck !
