1950's Johnson Starter.....

All,
I replaced an old starter and bracket assembly on one of my old 1956-1958 outboards with a like unit. This works without any hitches.

Somehow over the years I picked up a good Starter but no bracket as well. How do I swap out the starters on the bracket.
Are they pressed in or is there bolts I am not catching.

Starters appear to be identical. (bad one, one now on outboard, and extra one)

Also the old starter worked two years ago but has been in storage since and now appears to be frozen. Is there a rebuild kit available ...suggestions?

Thanks,
Chris

Remove the 2 bolts from the bottom of the starter to remove from the bracket.

They can easily be rebuilt. Wont know what is wrong till you open her up.

Re: 1950's Johnson Starter.....

All,
Got a chance to tear the starters down.

I first swapped the starters out so I have the good one on the bracket.....So I have a starter for my current project outboard....Thanks...it was simple after looking things over again...:)

Took the bad starter apart.

Everything seems to be there but things are corroded (dust rust). The bushings and springs assemblies seem to be ok...meaning they seem functional and there is plenty of bushing.

I wiped things down and reassembled but no luck. Things turn with no binding.

The armature does not smell burnt there is some light pitting on the one copper end.

Anyone have any suggestions to get this old starter to work again? I am proficient with a multimeter...but not sure where to start..:)

Thanks,
Chris
