So i just bought a new boat that came with a 85 Johnson on it its just bolted on not completely installed he said all it need is a stator I'm just wondering if anyone has had this outboard, if its a reliable motor, or if i should just ditch it and put something else on it?

That is a good motor...stators are not cheap though.
You can get a new one for $350, and a used one for less if look for it on craigs, ebay etc. Maybe get a parts motor.

Make sure the stator really is the problem first.

Do a cold-cranking compression check on the engine first. Make sure the compression is solid before your invest any $ into it. No point in putting on a stator if one hole is dead.
