Hi everyone,
I just finished fixing up a 1971 Johnson (thanks to some good advice from this forum)

Now I came across a 1978 Evinrude 4hp and got her going too!

My question: Many folks suggested 24:1 in the 1971 Johnson, is that also true with this 1978 Evinrude? (They are nearly identical, except the 78 has electronic ignition)

Well, I would definately check your model number and make sure it is a 1978 model. According to what I found on marineengine.com, the 1978 model was infact a full needle bearing model, which would make it a 50:1 motor, but the 1977 model only had needles on the top crank journel, which will still need the 24:1 mix. So, do your research and make sure of your model of motor.

1978 they finally got rid of the bushings and went to bearings for the con-rods and the lower crank journal. That engine can safely handle 50:1 although 24:1 won't hurt it any if you are sharing a fuel tank between the two engines. Make sure you you change out the fuel lines for ethanol resistant ones if you haven't already. 1978 was also the second year for the electronic ignition supposedly making the engines more reliable.
