You need to unhook the shift rod under the carbs in order for the lower unit to drop. Although it's a tight squeeze, you should not have to remove the carbs to get to it.
What EZ said. Once the lower unit is dropped the first thing I would do is measure the height of the rod just in case you knock it out of adjustment. That way it goes back in at the same height as it came out.
