Good morning folks, had s slight problem on Sunday evening my 1978 35hp Johnson made a slight grinding noise before coming to a complete stop and stalling when I tried to pull it over to restart it the head wouldn't move (it does move but only about a centimetre would I be correct in suspecting a crankshaft bearing has gone? My mate took both plugs out and peering inside as I moved the head the small amount I could could see both pistons were moving slightly this makes me believe it's not through lack of oil as I always ensure the fuel mix is correct. This it what make me think bearing???

You may be right but dont overlook the possiblity it could also be a stuck lower unit.....

Would that be in the exhaust housing? The serial number is 35BAL78R also I've been looking at parts and all I can find are parts for serial numbers 35EL78R/35E78R are these applicable to my engine?

Lower unit is just another term for the gearcase.....

I suspect the model number difference may only mean your motor was made in Belgium.....the other numbers should be applicable.....the one without an "L" would be a shortshaft though.

Easiest way to tell if its a seized gearcase is to remove it and then see if the flywheel will turn freely.....
