Hello all,

This is my first post. I?ll try to be as direct has possibly.

I?m looking at a boat that is fitted out with a "1997 Evinrude 200HP Ocean Pro" The mechanic has reported that the compression test is 90 across the cylinders. Is that low for this engine?

I thought that the compression should be closer to 100-120 across the cylinders. I?m trying to find the manufactures compression statistic for this engine, so if anyone knows those numbers it would also be helpful. Is higher better when buying a used engine?

The mechanic that has been maintaining the engine said that the engine is a ?LOW Compression model? Evinrude.
Did Evinrude make a low compression model ?

Thanks again for any help on this.

Howdy, Sisko.

Welcome to iboats. :)

For once I am able to agree with a public wrench. Yes, the big V6s were low compression engines and 90psi is a good result.

There is no OMC spec for psi. There are too many variables.

As said there are no compression specs published. On OMC you don't want more than 15 psi between cyls. Others will say 10%. Last time I seen a compression spec published was for a 1968 Evinrude snowmobile in their manual. They said 80 psi. And I was working on the dam thing. LOL.
