Hi folks

I have a older Johnson 9.5 Hp smurfy/ squat boat motor. ,,,
anyways and i bought it cheap enough so im not too worried..
But would like to get it going for fishing...

Ok
to make a long story short i think its maybe a salty...
I tried getting off the lower unit to do a water pump change out
cause after doing the point and coils...it ran not bad but
i didnt pump water...So off with the lower unit but to my horror i cant get it off..

i can not get the drive shaft out of the powerhead !! tried for hours

It is seized!

i have spray it up and let it soak for over the winter,, And still no success..I have hammered it pulled on it in different ways for hours !!!! nothing... the drive shaft is pretty near done now..have another parts lower unit and shaft :(
hate wrecking parts....of any sort but it happens..

and ideas tried even connecting a rope fashioned to the end of the drive shaft and let it hang for months..
thought gravity would have taken care of it,,, no luck,,,

thanks vikingsun

You have no choice but to remove the engine from its shell in order to remove that driveshaft....... Vice, Bigger Hammer, Vice Grips, Better Swinging position, etc. Hellava job!

Re: Older Johnson 9.5 Drive Sharft Stuck in the crank!

I had one of those. Shaft froze to powerhead forever. I busted a small slot on the pump housing when I got the lower off (key had to break through). I needed a new impeller, and after 3 weeks of hanging/soaking etc, figured it's toast. Then I just installed it all 'backwards' w/new impeller key sliding through the spot in the waterpump housing where it originally broke through. It actually worked and pumped just fine. Sold it for cheaper than normal w/disclosure on the issue. Maybe your drive shaft isn't bent yet, and isn't gummed up at the seal surface under waterpump and you can do the same? Good luck!
