Hi Guys NooB here from Blighty

i'm having a bit of a problem starting my outboard, i've read thru the top secret file, and checked more or less everything.

i'm begining to strip it down and rebuild it anyway, as it's an old one

Model No. is FDL 21R, besides that i cannot find any other info on it.

The storey so Far : - ( i might ramble on a bit)

The guy i bought it off, said it was a runner, but when i got there he'd conveniently snapped the pull chord, ok i said no

worries, that can be fixed, got it home, the re-coil spring was rotted and snapped, and the pullchord was a piece of rope.

replaced spring with a a genuine Evinrude one, and replaced chord with nylon rope. Great i thought now to try it, so

popped it in a bucket, pulled it, nothing. Ended up breaking chord, and renewing it twice thereafter.

I stripped the carb, and found the float valve needle to be stuck, so i used carb cleaner to clean it all out.

the next thing i found was the Cylinder Head needed to be helicoiled, as the spark plug thread was completely stripped

bare.

he'd even removed one of the spark plug washers so it would bite on the very last thread

so helicoiled that, and thought great, can try it again.

so popped it back into yonder bucket, it fired on second crank, ran a bit lumpy, but ran. When i went to rev it, it stalled,

so pulled it again, started, and did the same as above.

i also found this ingenius piece of master pipe work,

after that i haven't been able to start the engine at all  it just cranks and won't fire up.

so did a bit more investigating, and this is the part i'm not too good on, mechanics yes, electrical no

how do these things work, i have a basic idea

i cleaned the points and anything else that looked like it needed cleaning.

still no joy, the coils with the HT leads, were corroded at the spark plug end.

so am i looking at a mechanical problem, as there seems to be a fuel line going from the bottom of the block to the top.

which when disconnected doesn't seem to have fuel in it.

The bodged fuel line i have put temporary clear hose on so i can see if fuel is flowing, but it doesn't, which doesn't seem

good, as it goes into one of the cylider pots.

or

is it electrical, am i getting no power, i don't know what checks to do, to test if anything is working.

sorry for the long first post, but any pointers from your expert minds will be a great help, as it's now become a mission

to get this thing running

cheers

Mike

WOW! Not sure what's up with those coils, but I'd replace them. Did you check spark? Can't imagine that they wouldn't short out with those windings showing. Those plugs also need replacing. Try Champion J6C gapped at .030". And that carb should get a rebuild. That O-ring on the high speed nozzle is not right, and probably won't seal properly.

those coils look like someone tried to rewind them, and wrapped hockey tape over the windings!! never seen nothing like it!!! very odd

Definitely replace the coils. Do the points and condenser while you are at it. Redo the carb with a carb kit, change the sparks to Champion J6C's as Lindy says. Might want the replace the spark plug wires while you are at it..Make sure the are copper core (not modern graphite)

know which kit i'll need ? i've looked thru the store and there's so many to choose from

here's a video of it running, does it sound ok ? does it need anything else doin to it ?

VIDEO

On your first photo the float is mounted upside down.

Those are just low tension coils. On one of the pictures above you see the external high tension coils. Most probably that modification made the ignition more reliable.

Yes, those coils are ok. That model had external coils.

Re: Johnson/Evinrude Outboard

i think it's time to replace the fuel pump, it's can be burger to start, then runs and cuts out, you can see the fuel

disappear through the in line filter as it's running, gonna stick a 12v electrical pump on in it's place, as there is just

no fuel pressure there, and see how it goes ;)
